AAM Direct (Covert Communications)

A.A.M Direct (http://aamdirect.sourceforge.net/) is a newsgroup reader and posting program whereby two or more people can communicate through the alt.anonymous.messages newsgroup. A.A.M Direct might be better explained and understood to be a type of email system whereby two or more people can communicate privately (and anonymously) without having to open and use an email account.  The message text is automatically encrypted and transmitted by a secure TLS connection to a free news group server and placed out in the alt.anonymous.messages newsgroup under a continuously changing encrypted subject line. The program is also used to download all messages from the alt.anonymous.messages newsgroup and search out and display the messages sent to you. There is no definitive way for two communicating parties to be linked together with this system.

Download AAMDirectII from SourceForge (https://sourceforge.net/projects/aamdirect/files/)

You should download the updated .zip file "AAMDirectII.zip 2021-09-03 16.1 MB" which contains the updated version of AAMDirect and all of its sub-files.

Extract AAMDirect from the .zip file into a folder (it runs as a stand alone program, nothing to install). When you first start AAMDirect it will ask you to create a PGP Key Pair. After your key is created, click on the PARAMS button and turn off the option to use TOR (unless you are running TOR). Now click download messages. AAMDirect will scan the alt.anonymous.messages newsgroup looking for messages for you (there won't be any since you just created your key).

Type a message and click the 'Send Message' button and the message will be encrypted to your PGP key and posted to the alt.anonymous.messages. If you again download messages, you would retrieve your encrypted messages, and be able to decrypt them and read them on your computer. Of course, you don't want to just send messages to yourself. To send a message to other users you need their PGP Public Keys imported to your keyring (paste their Public Key into the work area, 'Right-Click' and 'Import to KeyRing'). Then you choose their key from the 'Recipient Keys' menu to encrypt the message to that other person. You obtain another person's Public Key by having them send it to you, or by copying it from an on-line source, such as a Key Server.

Using AAMDirect is a very secure means of communication, protecting the content of your messages with strong encryption and breaking the link (hiding the connection) between sender and receiver by using alt.anonymous.messages.

Now AAMDirect is NOT perfect (no encryption system is) and in 2014 Tom Ritter suggested a possible way to de-anonymize alt.anonymous.messages. He discusses this in detail in his YouTube video: [DEFCON 21] De-Anonymizing Alt.Anonymous.Messages. While this attack is certainly possible, it is beyond the capabilities of most.

There is a learning curve with AAMDirect (especially if you do not understand PGP). However, that learning curve is not too steep, and we have included our training Public Key below for those who want to send a practice message. If you include your Public Key with your message, we will post a reply to you in alt.anonymous.messages (at least for the next several days after this blog post is published).
