On-line First Aid and Medical Courses
At Cascadia Preparedness we believe that everyone should have, at a minimum, basic First Aid and CPR/AED training. The American Red Cross offers basic first aid courses on-line. Additional medical training expands your ability to respond in the wake a disaster. On-line training is available to help build that additional medical knowledge, although hands-on training and real-world experience under the supervision of a qualified medical professional is still recommended.
The following on-line courses are just some of the available options for expanding your first aid skills:
Basic Wilderness First Aid Course (Online) (University of Colorado ($95))
This course, open to everyone (not just students at the University of Colorado!) is an online course where you will learn backcountry first aid and earn a Basic Wilderness First Aid certificate.(Note: This is not a standard WFA certification)
Online instruction for the following topics:
Head and mental status
Circulation & Cardiac
Respiratory and Chest trauma
Abdominal injuries and illnesses
Musculoskeletal injuries
Wounds and Wound care
Drowning
Hypothermia
Heat Related Illnesses
Lightning
Altitude
Course Requirements:
Learn over the course of 14 modules (approximately 1 hour per module)
Complete the accompanying quizzes
Complete and submit one case study
Optional: Take the final exam at the end.
Vital Signs: Understanding What the Body Is Telling Us (Coursera (14 hours))
The vital signs – heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, respiration rate, and pain – communicate important information about the physiological status of the human body. In this six-part course we explore the anatomy and physiology underlying the vital signs so that you will develop a systematic, integrated understanding of how the body functions. Relevant body systems are reviewed including cardiovascular and respiratory, followed by explanations of how the function of these systems affects vital signs. We discuss normal ranges, normal variants, and the mechanisms that underlie changes in the objective measurement of vital signs. The course also includes demonstrations of appropriate techniques for measuring vital signs in yourself and others.
EMT Specialization

EMT Medical and Trauma Emergency Care. Gain the skills needed to provide first responder emergency. - This course goes beyond basic first aid, but will be of interest to individuals wanting additional medical training.

Deployed Medicine is a platform used by the Defense Health Agency to trial new innovative learning models aimed at improving readiness and performance of deployed military medical personnel. Courses, guidelines, and field-guides can be downloaded from this web-site for individual study.
Applied Anatomy & Physiology and Wilderness Medicine Course ($275)

Crisis Medicine ($25 - $575)
Crisis Medicine courses are completely consistent with the Tactical Emergency Casualty Care Committee Guidelines (TECC) and Tactical Combat Casualty Care Guidelines (TCCC). Crisis Medicine is a recognized education partner of the Co-TECC. The Co-TECC establishes guidelines for the provision of pre-hospital care to patients during a tactical incident.
