Can You Take Care Of Your Pet In An Emergency?

Disasters can strike at a moment’s notice. If your area needs to be evacuated, the last decision you want to be faced with is leaving your pet behind or sticking it out at home. And if you do stay home with your pet but need to be rescued, there’s a good chance first responders won’t be able to take your pet. During a disaster, many pet owners want to evacuate their pets with them, only to find that evacuation and sheltering options are limited or nonexistent. This disregard for companion animal welfare during a disaster can have public health consequences.

About 44% of people who refused to evacuate during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 did so because of their pets, according to a paper published in the American Journal of Public Health.
